The Lost Skeleton Returns Again! Now Out on DVD!

August 18th, 2010

The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra was a spot on homage to the low-budget, American International-style pictures of the 50′s and 60′s. It revelled in showing off the cheap special effects and questionable acting of the performers that were the hallmarks of many of those old movies. Remember the gorilla with the diving helmet whose mode of comunication was a bubble machine? Yeah, we’re talking that level of sophistication. Except on purpose. The plot, such as it was, concerned a scientist (Larry Blamire) and his wife (Fay Masterson) who trek to the isolated mountains (famed B-movie location Bronson Canyon) to find a recently crashed meteor that may contain that rarest of elements “atmosphereum”. Along the way, they encounter bickering aliens (Andrew Parks and Susan McConnell) — think the pair from Plan 9 from Outer Space — a hideous creature that is so obviously a man in a suit, a possessed scientist (Brian Howe), and a horrific skeleton that is clearly animated with ropes. Everything about the film was intentional, from the wooden acting and cheap special effects to the “always watch the skies” moralizing, in an attempt to recreate the authentic look of a B-movie. The film achieved a limited theatrical release and garnered a devoted cult following before being released on DVD in 2004.

The Lost Skeleton Returns Again!

The Lost Skeleton Returns Again!

Well, the cast and crew obviously had so much fun the first time, they decided to reunite for The Lost Skeleton Returns Again! This time Dr. Paul Armstrong, the scientist from the first film, has been missing in the jungle for two years and now his wife and the twin brother of the possessed scientist from the first movie embark on an expedition to retrieve the lost scientist and recover a rare mineral Jerranium 90. Racing against a rival expedition, our protagonists soon encounter some very familiar, bickering aliens, a lost tribe, horrible monsters, and the lovely Animala. Rowr, indeed! And as indicated by the title, the mysterious skull, all that remains of the lost skeleton of Cadavra, returns to take possession of another hapless soul. Enjoy these two trailers:

No word on whether this flick will be coming to NYC, but it is out on DVD and can purchased through Amazon. For more Lost Skeleton info, including more trailers and photos, visit The Lost Skeleton Returns Again!, the movie’s official web site.

The Monday Hangover — 8/16/2010

August 16th, 2010

I woke up this morning with the realization that I might be Willy Loman, Arthur Miller’s tragic protagonist from Death of a Salesman. Like poor Loman, I too feel that I am capable of greatness, but am frustrated at every turn by my inability to achieve said greatness. Have I been deluding myself all this time? The clock is slowly ticking away and there’s very little time to make my mark. Here’s hoping it happens soon.

Michael Scott Estimate Me

The Michael Scott death watch officially begins September 23 at 9PM when The Office returns for its seventh season. This is the last season for actor Steve Carell and so the question arises: how will Michael Scott exit Dunder-Mifflin? My personal choice: some sort of death that involves a mishap with his George Foreman Grill. Who would be surprised? Even better, the audience learns that Michael cheated another salesman out of the manager position years ago and that embittered salesman returns to exact revenge for the failure his life has become. The twist: the salesman is played by Ricky Gervais. Boom!

Frequent readers know of my affection for low-budget horror and sc-fi movies, often referred to as exploitation films. I was probably one of the few people who loved Grindhouse, the Rodriquez/Tarantino homage to the great drive-in exploitation films of the 60s and 70s. Now there is a new documentary exploring the exploitation scene that took place in the Philippines during the 70s. Machete Maidens Unleashed, the new film by Mark Hartley uncovers the trashy world of Filipino cinema where budgets, safety standards and in many cases women’s clothing were non-existent. Machete Maidens Unleashed contains a broad spectrum of interviews with the likes of Roger Corman, Joe Dante, and John Landis who all offer their unique perspectives on the underground cinema scene that took place in the far East. Here’s the extremely entertaining trailer (features nudity!!):

No word on if Machete Maidens Unleashed will be coming to US shores, but make sure to check Machete Maidens Unleashed for updates.

The Friday Mix — 08/13/10

August 13th, 2010

Oooh, I always wanted to do a post on Friday the 13th. Hopefully my face won’t melt off. I’ve read two bad reviews of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World in the last two days. How can this movie be bad? It was the most talked about event at Comic-Con this year. Could all those geeks be wrong? Is this a movie geeks and comic fans will embrace despite bad reviews if only to demonstrate to the general public that comics are still cool? The last big “comic movie,” Iron Man 2, received less than stellar reviews, but still managed to clean up at the box office, so anything’s possible. The real question: might The Expendables, Sly Stallone’s non-ironic take on the 80′s action movie genre and also opening this weekend, have the potential to appeal to many of the same Pilgrim fans? With many people still feeling the effects of the economic meltdown (or is still just me?) it may come down to an either/or scenario. I hope Scott Pilgrim does well so that it doesn’t put a chill on Edgar Wright and his upcoming Ant-Man project.

Hey, have you heard of this new 3-D technology? It creates a whole new movie viewing experience by allowing the action to break free from the confines of the simple two-dimensional screen. You’ll think the actors are right in your lap! Hollywood’s cyclical love affair with 3-D technology stretches all the way back to the 1952 film Bwana Devil, considered by many to be the first stereoscopic film. Like many relationships, there were emotional peaks and valleys and even a few break ups and reconciliations. Hollywood and stereoscopic technology now appear to be at an emotional peak and as everyone knows, what goes up keeps going up.

Acting as a relationship enabler, New York’s Film Forum has kicked off a two week program of classic 3-D movies starting today with the 1953 film Man in the Dark, a noir classic involving gangsters, brain surgery and amnesia. It’s paired with a Three Stooges short Pardon My Backfire. The Film Forum program runs the genre gamut from musicals to westerns to sci-fi and horror and even a Hitchcock film. Personally, I’m looking forward to Gorilla at Large.

Who doesn’t love a little Regency-era girl on girl action? Riding the success of the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies literary phenomenon comes another Jane Austen-inspired mashup: Jane Austen’s Fight Club. To be creatively successful these days, it seems all you have to do is drop Jane Austen characters into a contemporary situation. I’m developing the Jane Austen version of The Wild Bunch. Until then, enjoy this bloody trailer:

Hello Sweetie: The Mystery of River Song

August 12th, 2010

I recently decided to rewatch the entire fifth series of Doctor Who to try and evaluate Steven Moffat’s success or failure as show runner. Having just completed “Amy’s Choice”, I have to say that I am generally pleased. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about. As I watched “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Blood” — the series’ first two parter that reintroduces the Weeping Angels and River Song — I had a revelation. I figured out the whole Doctor/River Song relationship. How Ms. Song continually has the upper hand on the Doctor. In fact, I was so inspired by my discovery that I created a graph to illustrate their relationship. If you choose not to have things spoiled, please click away now.

OK, here it is: as the Doctor travels forward through his timeline, River Song is traveling backwards through his timeline. Totally just blew your mind, didn’t I? Check out the chart below and see if it’s not true:

Timeline for the Doctor and River Song

So let’s review things from the Doctor’s point of view (after all, that’s how we watch the episodes):

10th Doctor meets River Song

The Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead

In this episode, the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) encounters the mysterious Professor River Song (Alex Kingston), a woman who seems to know a lot about the Doctor’s future. Throughout both episodes, the Doctor is continually perplexed about River Song: she knows him, but he has never met her. He is also tantalized by the mysterious blue diary she carries around, documenting their previous encounters (or, from the Doctor’s POV, their future encounters). She even has her own sonic screwdriver, claiming that the Doctor gave it to her at some point in the future. The mystery of The Library almost seems secondary as the Doctor tries to solve the riddle of River Song.

“Forest of the Dead” ends with River sacrificing herself to save the patrons of The Library and as the moment approaches she says to the Doctor “You knew the entire time”, indicating that in their previous encounters, the Doctor has withheld the secret of River’s death, perhaps in order to preserve the timeline. A final twist is revealed as the Doctor returns to the question of why he would give River her own sonic screwdriver. It turns out the Doctor, knowing the fate that awaited River, constructed a neural relay into the sonic screwdriver that preserved River’s consciousness. He then transmits River’s consciousness into The Library’s computer, where she can live forever in an artificial environment.

Wit and Wisdom of River Song

  • About the Doctor: “I trust that man to the end of the universe. And actually, we’ve been.”
  • Also about the Doctor: “You know when you see a photo of someone you know, but it’s from years before you know them: it’s like they’re not quite finished, not done yet. Yes, the Doctor’s here. He came when I called, just like he always does, but not my Doctor.”
  • Talking to the Doctor about their future together: “You watch us run!”

Amy, the 11th Doctor and River Song

The Time of Angels / Flesh and Blood

While visiting a museum, the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) discover a homebox (a device similar to an airplane’s black box) containing a message from River Song, a message transmitted from 12,000 years in the past. Upon rescuing River from the vacuum of space, the trio land on the planet Alfava Metraxis where the space liner Byzantium has crashed. Within the ship is one of the Weeping Angels, the universe’s oldest, deadliest assassins. River still seems to know more about the Doctor as she proceeds to order him around in a manner similar to “The Silence in the Library”. At one point, when introducing Amy to River, the Doctor slips up referring to River as “Professor” which has not happened in her timeline. Interestingly, it is revealed that River Song has been held prisoner in a Stormcage containment facility for a very serious crime and is out on parole in an effort to reduce her sentence.

By the end of the second part, “Flesh and Stone”, we learn something about the Doctor’s potential future: when asked why River is in prison, she replies that she killed a very important man. The episode ends with River saying that the next time they meet will be when the Pandorica opens. The Doctor scoffs, saying the Padorica is a fairy tale, but nevertheless, he looks concerned.

The Wit and Wisdom of River Song

  • “Doctor! Can you sonic me?”
  • To the Doctor: “It’s so strange when you go all baby face.”
  • To the Doctor again: “You, me, handcuffs: must it always end this way?”
  • Shout out to a future episode: “You’ll see me again quite soon: when the Pandorica opens.”

River Song

The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang

The two part series finale begins with Vincent Van Gogh, Winston Churchill, Elisabeth the 10th and River Song all trying to get a message to the Doctor about a universe-shattering event that seems to directly involve his TARDIS. Leaving a message on a cliff face of the oldest planet of the universe brings the Doctor and Amy to ancient England where River is waiting with Van Gogh’s painting. It reveals the location of the Pandorica, a device said to hold within it the most dangerous being in the universe. Needless to say, the Pandorica is actually a trap for the Doctor, conceived and constructed by his most hated enemies including the Daleks, Cybermen, and Sontarans. All seems lost — the Doctor is trapped in the Pandorica and River has piloted the TARDIS to the point in time which it exploded, which it does, wiping out the entire universe. Can the Doctor save creation?

Well of course he does. Through a series of time-hopping events, the Doctor manages to restart the universe returning everything to normal. At the end of “The Big Bang”, the Doctor and River share a private moment, where she apologizes to the Doctor, hinting that their relationship is about to change. Could this have anything to do with her previous statement at the end of “Flesh and Stone” about “murdering a very important man”?

The Wit and Wisdom of River Song

  • In a showdown with a Dalek that believes she will not kill it: “I’m River Song. Check your records.”
  • Responding to the Doctor’s question about her identity: “You’re going to find out very soon. And I’m sorry, but that’s when everything changes.”

And so the series ends with a bit of a mystery for the sixth series. Steven Moffat has hinted that when we next encounter River Song, she won’t recognize the Doctor, indicating that we will see their first meeting. But what does the future hold for River and the Doctor. It’s been hinted in several episodes that they are married. It has also been hinted in “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Stone” that River is in the Stormcage containment facility for murdering an important man, “a hero to many”. Could this man be the Doctor? We’ll have to wait until next year to find out what mysteries about the Doctor’s future lie in River Song’s past.

Watch Free Movie Trailers at Work

August 4th, 2010

It’s the hump day, people: that part of the week marking the beginning of the countdown to the weekend. Start the party. Of course, if you happen to be a working person, the day is significant, but what if you sit in your apartment everyday bemoaning your unemployment status? Then is it just a Wednesday? Is there really any difference between a day that symbolically marks the start of the weekend and any other day? What really is there to look forward to when each day passes like the one previous to it and is the model for days to follow?

That’s too deep. Instead of thinking about weighty issues, let’s watch movie trailers instead. That sounds like fun!

First up, Robert Rodriguez made a faux trailer entitled Machete that was seen as part of his and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse movie a few years ago. Well, the trailer proved to be as popular (or more popular, depending on who you ask) as the main feature, so now Rodriguez and company are making an actual Machete movie. Judging by the trailer, the movie strives to match the 70′s era exploitation cinema vibe while filtering it through all the special effects technology currently available to directors. Also, it has Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez with any eye patch.

For a more stabby version, the red-band trailer can be seen at Mania.com.

Back in 1978, Joe Dante teamed up with writer John Sayles and made Piranha, a low-budget cash-in on the first ever summer blockbuster Jaws. What could have been a cynical attempt at riding Spielberg’s coat tails wound up being a fun, scary, tongue-in-cheek homage to Jaws specifically and nature on the rampage movies in general. Now the movie is getting a special-edition DVD and Blue-Ray release ahead of the 3D remake. Here’s the trailer for the original, starring Bradford Dillman, Heather Menzies, the lovely Barbara Steele, and Joe Dante mainstays Kevin McCarthy and Dick Miller.

Hmm, I wonder which version will be better: the one with honest suspense and characterization or the one with 3D special effects and boobies.

Thor and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Trailers Now Online

July 29th, 2010

It’s a big day for Marvel, with the debut of the trailer for Kenneth Branagh’s Thor and the trailer for Disney XD’s Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Not being a huge fan of Thor, the buzz around the movie was off my radar for a while. The stills featuring Thor and Odin reminded me of something that would have come out in the post-Tim Burton’s Batman era where the answer to spandex seemed to be crazy armored suits. But after seeing the trailer, I have to admit: I’m feeling jazzed. Kirk’s father looks like he is going to kick ass.

The Avengers, Marvel’s premiere super team, is debuting in animated form on Disney XD sometime in 2011. The lineup appears to include Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Ant-Man (and it appears he becomes Giant Man at some point), the Wasp, and Hawkeye. Does the Black Widow make an appearance in there? File this one under extremely anticipated.

Doctor Who: After The Big Bang

July 27th, 2010

So the final episode of Steven Moffat’s run of Doctor Who has finally aired here in America. It was great seeing both episodes at Comic-Con with a huge crowd, laughing and cheering at all the right moments. Judging by the reaction of the attendees, the episodes were a success. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan (and to an extent Artur Darvill) are the new Doctor/companion duo to beat for any future actors entering the series.

With mysteries resolved, how will the rapport between the Doctor and Amy be altered in the upcoming sixth series? We will have to wait until December’s Christmas special for answers to that question. That’s a heck of a long wait, however, so let’s celebrate the conclusion of Series Five with some wonderful images of the Doctor, Amy, and Rory.

If you haven’t seen “The Big Bang” yet, you might want to skip this post as it reveals the end of the episode.

Last chance…

Really, this is it…

No seriously, you should look away now…

OK, you were warned. Here are Amy and Rory’s wedding pics:

The Monday Mashup — 2010 Comic Con Hangover Edition

July 26th, 2010

So I sit here, bleary-eyed, wondering if the last several days were just a dream, if they really ever happened. But of course they did and I have the pictures to prove it. San Diego Comic Con has come to an end for 2010 and rather than bore you with my amateur prose, I’ll just jump right into pics:
